Dental Exam

dental-exam-1Dental exams done on a regular basis are an essential part of preventative health care. During the dental exam, the dentist will clean your child’s teeth and evaluate your child’s risk of tooth decay. It may include various protective measures such as sealants or fluoride treatments, which help in reducing risk of decay. It may also include dental x-rays or other diagnostic procedures.

During a dental exam, proper brushing and flossing techniques, proper nutrition and good oral hygiene habits will be discussed. On regular dental exams the dentist will be able to provide instructions on caring for your child’s teeth, and detect any problems early.

When to have a dental exam:

Ages 6 months to a year

It is best to schedule a child’s dental exam after the first tooth erupts and no later than his/her first birthday. Your child’s baby teeth and gums will be examined.

Toddlers, school-age and adolescents

Regular dental check ups every 6 months is highly recommended for this age group. If your child is at high risk of tooth decay or has dental or oral health concerns, the dentist might recommend more frequent visits.
